CdTe Technology

Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) photovoltaics are deployed in some of the world's largest photovoltaic power stations, including the Topaz Solar Farm. CdTe has long been recognised as a leading thin-film PV material, owing to its near-optimal bandgap of 1.44 eV and high absorption coefficient.

CdTe solar cells have quietly established themselves as a mass-market PV technology. Although the market remains dominated by silicon, CdTe now holds approximately 7% market share and stands as the first second-generation thin-film technology to achieve truly large-scale deployment. CdTe thin-film solar cells can be manufactured rapidly and cost-effectively, offering a compelling alternative to conventional silicon-based technologies. The record efficiency for a laboratory CdTe solar cell stands at 22.1%, with average commercial module efficiency reaching approximately 18% by the end of 2020.

On a lifecycle basis, CdTe PV technology offers the smallest carbon footprint, lowest water consumption, and shortest energy payback time of any photovoltaic technology currently available. With an energy payback time of less than one year, CdTe enables faster carbon reductions without creating short-term energy deficits, and its modules are designed to last between 25 and 30 years.
